Downloads

The following products are free to download and use.  I will be adding other "freebies" as I get time.  Currently, these consist of two training lessons and two utilities.  The first utility is a time-tracking tool as either an Microsoft Access database (runs in MS Access® 2000 or 2003), and an Excel workbook (MS Excel 2003 or earlier versions).  The second utility is an estimation workbook for estimating training material development time.  Associated with this one is a guideline explaining it's usage.

  • All of these have macros to enable them to work.
  • There are no cookies, tracking, 'spyware', or other mischievous code within these files.
  • Any comments or recommendations for improvement are always welcome.

Training Materials

IS D3L05 Project Estimation - this is a Microsoft® PowerPoint® slideshow I put together to train IS staff on creating effort and schedule estimations for projects involving software development.  The source version has detailed instructor notes.

IS D3L06 Risk Management - this is a Microsoft® PowerPoint slideshow I put together to train IS staff on performing risk management for projects involving software development.  The source version has detailed instructor notes.

Effort Metrics

ProjectEffort-2000-empty.zip - this is a 'zipped' Microsoft® Access database I put together for tracking an individual's efforts on an hourly basis.  There are many tables which can be set up for a particular project (s), sub-project (s), documents, activities, and relation to a time card system.

TMP_IS_Effort-Tracking.xls - this is a 'zipped' Microsoft® Excel version of the Access database for those who don't have or want to use Access.  There are two versions, the original for Excel 2003 SP2 and the 'TMP_IS_Effort-Tracking-2000.zip' which is for Excel 97 - 2000.  Both are  for tracking an individual's efforts on an hourly basis.  There are many sheets which can be set up for a particular project (s), sub-project (s), documents, activities, and relation to a time card system.

Effort Estimation

This is a separate WEB page containing a Macromedia Flash module which randomly adds overhead to each staff workday to get a loaded estimate of effort and calendar duration.

I also wrote it as a separate application in C# to see the code differences.  You can get to the C# version here.

Training Estimation

TMP_Training Estimation Spreadsheet.xls - this is a Microsoft Excel workbook I use for sizing and then estimating training development projects.  The sizing metric is Training Points which is similar to feature points.  There is an algorithm to adjust these by the complexity of the material and the developer's knowledge. Although some sheets are password protected, the password is blank; so that can be set by the head of the training development department.  It is important than individuals not be allowed to change the algorithms if these are used to build a historical database.  The detailed information on this estimation model is in the guidelines, STD_IS_Training-Estimation-Guidelines.zip , also compressed.

I started tracking actual effort by more granular means in order to establish productivity metrics for estimation of future projects.  Most time card systems are set up for 'billable' hours versus actual hours worked.  Since most people record 40 hours of work in a time card system (time in the building) as opposed to actual work, I find reports from time card systems inadequate for determining productivity and actual phase efforts.

I've started a non-profit organization called the Center for Software Engineering Ethics to focus on research and training in this area. See  http://www.cswee.org/ for more on this and related issues.

Integration & Test

These files are sanitized documents I produced under a military project. I've removed any mention of the company, contract, and major project-specific acronyms. These were part of a comprehensive test suite and are not all inclusive.
